Old friends gather at the senior luncheon

Hello, New Windsor. Being the Recreation Director for the last 17+ years, I have met so many amazing people over the years; I have been truly blessed. Being here so long it is also sad having lost so many of those amazing people, which unfortunately comes with having worked in the same job for so many years. It also amazes me that even after all of these years working as Recreation Director, I learn some new things about the people that I have met while on the job. And I learned something new last week that I thought was pretty amazing and wanted to share in this column.

Two women I have known my entire 17 years while working in New Windsor, both who are in their late 90’s and still independent and living at home, are Mary Decunzo and Rose Sears. While at our annual Senior Luncheon, I learned that Rose and Mary have known each other since they were teenagers living on Washington Street in the City of Newburgh. And nearly 80 years later they both were at our Senior Luncheon catching up with each other.

I knew that they had both known each other from the New Windsor Senior Club and attending the Marasco Senior Center, but I had no idea they knew each other for so long. And found out when Councilwoman Sylvia Santiago got talking to them and they told her. She told me and I thought that we needed to get a picture together. The only thing that I wasn’t thrilled about was that both of them look better than me! So I ask God to keep blessing Mary and Rose with health and happiness and that He look after both of them.

Happy wedding anniversary to my wife Jenn on October 1. I always joke and tell her it feels like we have been married 50 years, and she asks if that is a good thing or a bad thing. We have four wonderful children and we are very blessed from God. And Happy one-year Wedding Anniversary to our son Brendan and his wonderful wife Eryn who are also celebrating on October 1.

The Town of New Windsor will have our tenth and second to last Farmers Market of the season on Saturday October 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the New Windsor Town Hall Complex Lawn by the gazebo. Besides all of the great vendors Kelly Allegra, New Windsor Town Clerk, also hosts an information table at each event. There will be a plant raffle, plus free coffee, refreshment and treat (each market is different).

The Farmers Market is held twice a month through October with 11 total markets. There is some space still available for anyone that is interested in becoming a vendor please reach out to the Town of New Windsor Recreation Department by calling 845-565-7750 or email Recreation Director Matt Veronesi at mveronesi@newwindsor-ny.gov if you are interested.

Birthday shout outs this week go to Jeff Haight whose birthday is on September 28, to Lukas Csury whose birthday is on October 1, to Austin Conklin whose birthday is on October 2, and to anyone else out there celebrating birthdays this week, Happy Birthday!

If anyone has a birthday or other special event you want mentioned in my column, or have anything going on in New Windsor that you want the world to know about you can reach me at mveronesi@optimum.net or by calling 845-629-1260. Have a great week.
