PB minors rally to win District 19 crown

The Pine Bush Minors baseball team was three outs from having to play a second game against Warwick.

Needing four runs to tie and at least four extra innings, they got five as Zechariah Grant reached on an error by Warwick shortstop Alex Karameros, chasing home Camden Doiron with the tying run and Hunter Peifley with the winning run as Pine Bush won the District 19 championship, 7-6, on Thursday night at Crawford Town Park in Pine Bush.

“It shows they never give up,” Pine Bush manager Tom Gandolfini said. “They were prepared. They were ready. The other team was a great team, a well-coached team. The ball bounced our way, and in that last inning, we came through.”

A loss wouldn’t have doomed Pine Bush, but it would have set up a decisive championship game immediately after, but they answered the call in the bottom of the seventh inning, against Warwick relief pitcher Kyle Herrmann.

Cannon Marshall started things off with a base hit and Tommy Spanjer singled, and Timmy Cassidy walked to load the bases. Marshall scored when Doiron reached on an error and another came in when Hunter Peifley walked, putting the winning runs on base.

Warwick brought in Gavin Astbury in relief of Herrmann. Chase Gandolfini flew out to right fielder Sean Gobinski, but an errant throw brought Cassidy into score and pulled Pine Bush to within a run.

However, with Warwick one out from forcing a second game, Grant reached on the error that won the game for Pine Bush.

“They’ve been doing it the whole playoffs,” coach Gandolfini said. “I knew they had it in them, but it’s just a matter of if it’s going to happen or not. They dug deep and they did it.”

Pine Bush got on the board in the first inning when Spanjer scored on a wild pitch. Warwick tied the game in the second on an error by Chase Gandolfini, and then took a 3-1 lead in the fourth on a two-run single by Dany Walsh.

Pine Bush got a run in the bottom of the inning when Spanjer scored on Doiron’s fielder’s choice. Warwick added a run in the fifth and then two more in the sixth inning.

Pine Bush advanced to the championship game when Cassidy and Marshall combined on a no-hitter in a 14-0 win over Town of Newburgh-New Windsor.

Two Pine Bush pitchers combined for a no-hitter in a win over Town of Newburgh-New Windsor on July 10 in Warwick.

Pine Bush led 2-0 after the first two innings before scoring four runs in the third inning and eight more in the fourth to end the game by the 10-run rule.

Cassidy had a double, four RBIs and two runs scored. Doiron had two hits and three RBIs. Chase Gandolfini also had two hits and three RBIs.

Newburgh was sent to the elimination bracket, where they were eliminated from the tournament by Warwick.

“I’ve got a special bond with all these kids because they’ve been together for the last five weeks every night,” coach Gandolfini said. “I love these kids.”

Rainouts had forced the need for a doubleheader on Thursday if Warwick forced another championship game. Pine Bush went immediately on to Friday’s Section 3 North tournament.

“Here on out is a bonus,” coach Gandolfini said. “In sections it gets harder, I think we have a prepared team. I think we have a team that can do it, but we’ll see what happens. It’s all bonus from here.”

The bonus didn’t last long as Pine Bush lost two straight games in the Section 3 North tournament.

They were beaten, 13-8, by White Plains in Valhalla on Saturday in a game that was started on Friday in Middletown. It was suspended in the third inning with the game tied at 6-6.

Pine Bush was then beaten, 18-3, by Courtlandt American on Saturday afternoon.
