 Phyllis Chaffee Brescia passed away at home surrounded by her loving family on July 19, 2024. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.

Phyllis was born in Bath, New York to Lillian Irene Shipman and Stephen Chaffee on April 28, 1939. She moved to Montgomery at a young age with her family and made it home for the rest of her life.  She graduated from Montgomery High School and married the love of her life, Vincent N. Brescia.  Phyllis and Vince had three children; Stacy, Steve and Shari.

Growing up at Lake Sherman in the summers, with her sisters and cousins, Phyllis became an avid water skier and always impressed everyone with her waterskiing abilities.  She also learned to master maneuvering the boat around the lake which later made her one of the only females given permission to drive a boat out of Newburgh Yacht Club.

Phyllis’s family meant everything to her, she taught her children, nieces and nephews many valuable lessons while spoiling them as they grew up.  She enjoyed traveling and loved her pets.

She leaves behind her daughter; Stacy Brescia Spreer and her husband, Jeffrey Spreer of Montgomery,, her son; L. Stephen Brescia and his girlfriend, Joan Christiano of Montgomery, her grandsons; Vincent M. Brescia and Nicholas A. Brescia, Nieces; Megan Rose and Kristyn Sprague Pavich, Nephews: Marc Devitt, Mckew Devitt, F. Edward Devitt II, her beloved dog; Paris, and many great nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her parents; Lillian Irene Shipman and Stephen Chaffee, her husband; Vincent N. Brescia, her daughter; Shari Jo Brescia, her sisters; Mary C. Devitt, and Nanci Sprague, and her niece Mary “Mia” Frances Devitt.

Visitation we be Thursday, July 25, from 4 to pm at Overhiser’s Funeral Home 78 Union Street, Montgomery

Internment of ashes will be Friday, July 26, 2024 at 11am at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Montgomery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Orange and Sullivan County.
