Pine Bush Juniors claim District 19 crown

It wasn’t pretty, but it got the job done.

Liam Tuttle hit a ground ball to second base that was bobbled by Monroe-Woodbury second baseman Nathan Gonzalez. He stayed with the ball, but Tuttle beat the ball to third base as Cody Hanson crossed the plate giving Pine Bush a 3-2 win on July 11 in the District 19 Juniors baseball championship game at Town of Crawford Park.

It was a game Pine Bush didn’t want to play in as they entered the July 10 championship game unbeaten.

They suffered a 6-1 loss to Monroe-Woodbury in the first game, forcing the second decisive championship game. They were down most of the second game, also trailing 2-1, heading into the bottom of the seventh.

“It just shows the fight in them,” manager Keith Vanoyan said. “They never gave up the entire day. It was said before the game that we were never going to give up and they didn’t.”

Pine Bush went quietly the day before as Troy Fontana drove in Pine Bush’s only run in the loss, and the bats were quiet again as Josh Konior limited Pine Bush to one run over the game’s first six innings and went into the bottom of the seventh with Monroe-Woodbury leading 2-1.

To that point, Pine Bush’s only run had come in the first inning on an RBI single by Fontana that tied the game at 1-1.

Monroe-Woodbury took a 2-1 lead on Dan DeFilippo’s RBI single in the fourth inning. Konior had given Monroe-Woodbury a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a base hit.

But with his team leading by a run and three outs to go for a District 19 championship, Konior walked Dylan Bekgran to start the inning.

That’s when the coaches knew their team would come back.

“Once we get people on base and the dugout starts losing their minds, the energy level rises, and these guys don’t quit.”

Then with one out, Cody Hanson put Pine Bush in position to win when he doubled over the head of Monroe-Woodbury center fielder Zach Hampton, putting runners on second and third.

Finn Gandolfini followed with a short fly ball into right field that was misplayed by right fielder Braeden Giordano, and Bekgran beat the throw home to tie the game.

Then with two out, Tuttle’s grounder gave Pine Bush the release they needed as they erupted in celebration when Hanson crossed home with the winning run as Tuttle beat Gonzalez’s throw to first base.

Pine Bush finished the week with a trip to the Section 3 North championship series against White Plains on Thursday and Friday.

They lost the first game, 13-1, on Thursday in Ardsley, putting them on the brink of elimination. Maddox Miranowicz drove in Pine Bush’s lone run with a single in the first inning.

Their summer ended on Friday night at Rumbrook when they were shut out 12-0 by White Plains.

“This was a long time coming, especially for me and (assistant coach) Gary (Tuttle),” Vanoyan said. “We’ve been doing this together for a very long time. This is our first district championship together.”
