Still time to volunteer

In the event that you missed the statewide RecruitNY open house hosted by your local fire department last weekend, there is still time to volunteer. Volunteer fire departments across New York State are struggling with decreased membership and increased call volume, and need to bolster their ranks to provide the optimum level of protection for its residents.

The statewide recruiting effort took place last weekend, with many local fire departments participating. A few sought to take their message outside of the firehouse. Volunteers from the Good Will Fire Department set up a table at the Mid Valley Mall on Sunday, hoping to attract a few grocery shoppers to their ranks. The coordinated effort known as RecruitNY is the creation of The Firefighters Association of the State of New York (FASNY).

While many firefighters begin as junior members (usually between the ages of 16-18), no one is too old to join. If you are physically able to meet the medical requirements for the role you are seeking, your application will be considered. While you may not meet the medical/physical criteria to be an interior firefighter, you may meet the criteria to serve as an exterior firefighter, a driver, fire police member or fill an important support role. Help is always needed.

No experience is necessary. Your local fire department and local training centers and programs will provide you all the training and all of the protective equipment that you need. It is by no means an easy job, but the support system is there and the rewards are great.

If you missed your local open house, there’s no need to wait until the next one comes around. Most fire departments host an assortment of community events, including pancake breakfasts and special events. The next time you are at one of these, introduce yourself and arrange for a private tour.

Or simply drop in and say hello. You will likely find someone more than happy to speak with you about the benefits of becoming a volunteer firefighter.

You can still be a local hero.
