The need for crash gates along the highways

The work of the region’s First Responders at last week’s rollover of a school bus on I-84 in western Orange County drew widespread praise, from Gov. Kathy Hochul on down to the heartbroken Nassau County officials who made the journey to Orange County. The tragedy underscores the critical importance of enhancing safety measures on our highways.

Last week’s tragic rollover of a bus carrying high school musicians from Farmingdale, Long Island to a weekend event in Pennsylvania, resulting in two fatalities and dozens of injuries, serves as a grim reminder of the need for immediate action. It is heartening to see Senator James Skoufis and Assemblyman Karl Brabenec, alongside local officials and firefighters, raising their voices to advocate for the installation of a ‘crash gate’ on this interstate.

Such a measure could prove to be a lifesaver and a game-changer in emergency response.

But what exactly is a crash gate on a highway in New York, and why is it so crucial?

A crash gate, also known as an emergency access gate, is a discreet but essential feature on our highways, designed to provide swift access for emergency vehicles and services. These gates are strategically placed between existing exit ramps, often in remote areas with limited facilities, and they offer a direct route for first responders to reach the scene of an incident quickly. While they may seem inconspicuous, crash gates are, in fact, invaluable tools that can make a significant difference in critical situations.

In the wake of last week’s devastating bus rollover on I-84, the need for a crash gate at this location has become evident. The incident resulted in the loss of two lives and left more than 40 riders injured. Such tragic accidents necessitate a comprehensive approach to safety, and crash gates are an integral part of that strategy.

The advantages of installing a crash gate on I-84, or any other interstate highway in New York State, are multifaceted:

Swift Emergency Response: Time is of the essence in emergencies. Crash gates allow first responders, including paramedics, firefighters, and law enforcement officers, to reach the scene faster. In situations where minutes can mean the difference between life and death, this rapid access can be a critical factor.

Enhanced Safety: Crash gates provide a designated route for emergency vehicles, minimizing the risk of accidents and collisions that can occur when navigating through heavy traffic or unfamiliar terrain. They create a safer environment for both responders and the public.

Improved Accessibility: Crash gates are especially beneficial in areas with limited exit ramps and rest areas, where access to the highway can be challenging. They ensure that even remote stretches of the interstate are not left without quick emergency response capabilities.

Safety on our highways should be non-negotiable. We cannot afford to wait for more tragedies to strike before taking action. Crash gates are not just gates; they are gateways to saving lives and mitigating the impact of accidents. Let us rally behind this call for safer highways and support the installation of crash gates across New York State. It is a small investment that can make a world of difference when it matters most.
