The Tillson, Toc and Vineyard Avenue project is far from complete. The footing for the new culvert has not even been installed, rebar sticks out of the ground, the culvert itself and tons of stone still needs to be brought in for the road alignment and paving. About 1000 people are being negatively impacted by this project daily. In our supervisor’s April report the project completion date was in September. In his July report he extended the completion date to “ before winter.” He did not explain why, or provide a solution or an apology pertaining to this delay.

Even September had seemed unimaginable at the time because of the rude shock of Vineyard Avenue and Toc Drive being closed. It is only 2000 feet from Brescia Blvd to the town hall but it became a 5 mile detour, through backed up traffic on Chapel Hill Rd and 9W. That is five miles each way. And this detour affects everyone from Emerson Terrace, Vista drive, Alex Court, Sunnybrook Circle, Toc Drive, Cambridge Court, Hilltop Lane, Brescia Blvd, Reservoir Road, Tano Drive, Diana Ridge Road and Carmella Road. Also Vineyard Ave to the south. Most of those 1000 or so people are now detoured onto Brescia and then another five miles - along with all of the construction vehicles and workers needed to build Mountainside woods going by every day. There is 55 feet of road width, plus the distance to the culvert - yet no one thought to leave a lane open for the residents. How could anyone in a position of responsibility think that is OK?

The supervisor has said that NYSDOT was in control of the project and the road closure and that this was not even really a town project. That is not correct. The town’s consulting engineer was in charge of the design including the traffic and detour plan. The town bid out the project and awarded the contract. What happened in May and June to delay the construction and what has our supervisor done to correct this delay? Was the contractor called in and forced to re-adjust his schedule? Was he made to put more workers on or work longer hours? Many days the site sat empty with contractor trucks parked on the road. Why did our town not leave a single lane on Vineyard for traffic to pass by? The supervisor has not addressed these questions or done anything sufficient to expedite this project. In his October report there was more about 4th of July Fireworks, dinners and watching Moonstruck than about concrete bridge footings. Vote for the individuals that will get the job done: Elect Stu Weiss, Supervisor, Re-Elect Mike Guerriero and Joe Mazzetti, Councilmen by voting row “A” this November.
