TN-NW wins 3rd straight District 19 title

The Town of Newburgh-New Windsor senior baseball team not only got its revenge, but they also got their three-peat.

Town of Newburgh-New Windsor beat Middletown, 7-1, on Thursday at Watts Field to clinch their third straight District 19 championship.

The team had to fight back through the elimination bracket, beating the Middies twice last week.

Newburgh-New Windsor’s only loss in the tournament came on June 20, a 3-2 loss to Middletown, which didn’t play again until meeting Newburgh-New Windsor on June 28 for the first championship game.

Five days after losing to Middletown, Newburgh-New Windsor recovered to beat Greenwood Lake to send themselves back to Middletown. They forced Thursday’s decisive championship game by beating Middletown, 11-1, on Wednesday at Watts in a game that was called in the bottom of the sixth inning due to the 10-run rule.

Newburgh-New Windsor got on the board with two runs in the third inning. Mike Bonura doubled to lead off the inning and came around to score on Chase Rounds’ RBI single. Colin Wing reached on an error and scored when Sean Hinspeter reached on an error.

Newburgh added three more runs in the third inning on runs by Luis Pagan, Bonura and Wing.

Wing scored his third run of the game in the fifth inning, and JP Walsh also scored a run.

Joey Santo got the win for Newburgh-New Windsor on the mound, going the first six innings after throwing an inning the day before. Wing threw the final inning in relief.

Middletown scored its only run in the sixth inning.

Newburgh-New Windsor was scheduled to advance to the Section 3 North tournament, but unable to field a team for the tournament, District 19 runner-up Middletown got the spot.

Town of Newburgh-New Windsor recovered from its first loss of the tournament on June 24 with a win over Greenwood Lake, setting them up for their rematch against Middletown.

Town of Newburgh-New Windsor forced a decisive championship game with a win over Middletown on Wednesday at Watts Park.

The game was shortened after six innings by the 10-run rule.

Town of Newburgh-New Windsor led 3-1, heading into the bottom of the sixth inning and erupted for eight runs against two Middletown pitchers to prevent the need for a seventh inning.

Town of Newburgh-New Windsor won their third straight District 19 championship with a win over Middletown on Thursday.

They were scheduled to advance to the Section 3 North tournament.

The Hudson Valley Select scored three runs each in the first and fifth innings and then scored one each in the other three on their way to a win over the Mahopac Indians Gold on June 25 at New Windsor Little League.
The Indians scored their lone run in the seventh inning.

The Newburgh Knights were swept in a doubleheader to open their Greater Hudson Valley Baseball season on June 25 in Woodbury.

The Knights took a took a 3-1 lead, but the Smash erupted for four runs in the third inning to take the first game. Newburgh scored two in the first game and tacked on single runs in the second and fourth innings.

The Knights led the second game as well, but the Smash scored four runs in the fourth inning to win the second game. The Smash led 9-4 going into the bottom of the sixth. The Knights scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh.

New Paltz Hawks 12, Newburgh Red Storm 0

The Newburgh Red Storm only managed two hits and made five errors in the field on their way to a loss in New Paltz.

The Hawks got on the board with four runs in the first inning. They added two in the fourth, one in the fifth and then exploded for five runs in the sixth.

Tyler Ostrander got the win on the mound with seven strikeouts, leading the Newburgh Red Storm to victory on June 27.

Braden Algarin had two hits and two RBIs and Andrew Livaditis had two hits and three RBIs.

Garrett McGovern had a walkoff hit, driving in the winning run and lifting the Red Storm to victory.

Liam Lynch pitched five innings, allowing one run and striking out seven. A.J. Grant had two hits, including a double and an RBI. Adrian Segura had two hits with an RBI and a run scored.
