The Town of Newburgh Minors (11U) baseball team is three wins away from the Section 3 North championship after they defeated Cortlandt American, 13-3, on Saturday at the Patrick Henry Field in White Plains.

Newburgh broke a 3-3 tie in the third inning with three runs, and then added seven more in the fourth inning to end the game after four innings by the 10-run rule.

The win, along with some inclement weather on Saturday, postponed the championship bracket game to Sunday, which gave Newburgh the day off.

They were scheduled to play on Monday against the loser of the game between District 20 champion White Plains and District 18 Nyack-Valley Cottage-Congers on Sunday.

If Newburgh were to win Monday, they would have to beat the winner of that game twice to win the Section 3 North championship.

The section champion will move on to the New York State tournament.

Newburgh opened the sectional tournament getting routed by Nyack-Valley Cottage-Congers on Friday at Memorial Park in Warwick.

Town of Newburgh managed only one hit in the game and made seven errors.

NVCC scored three runs in the first inning, eight in the third and five in the fourth. The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Town of Newburgh advanced to the Section 3 North tournament by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to erase a two-run deficit to beat Warwick, 11-7 on July 8 to win the District 19 championship on July 8 at the Town of Newburgh Little League Complex.

Newburgh scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning, but Warwick added three in the top of the fourth to tie the game.

Newburgh re-took the lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but Warwick took a 6-4 lead with three more runs in the top of the fifth.

Newburgh responded with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a five-run lead. Warwick scored one more run in the top of the sixth.
