Traffic stop leads to drug arrest

On March 27, at approximately 2:30 a.m., a trooper patrolling State Route 9W in the town of Newburgh stopped a 2007 Nissan Versa for a violation of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law.

While interviewing the operator of the vehicle, Saiyquana Reed, age 21 from the city of Poughkeepsie, the trooper smelled marijuana coming from inside of the vehicle. The trooper had Reed and her passenger, Darwin Santos, age 21 from the town of Poughkeepsie exit the vehicle. While searching the vehicle, the trooper found marijuana and numerous plastic bags containing heroin and amphetamine. Reed and Santos were both charged with charged Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 3rd degree, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 4th, all felonies. Reed was additionally charged with Unlawful Possession of Marihuana 2nd degree, a violation. Santos was additionally charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 5th degree Intent to Sell, a felony.

Reed and Santos were released on appearance tickets returnable to the Town of Newburgh Court on April 20, at 5 p.m.
