Two Dukes named to Section 9 All Star team

After a down season, the Marlboro boys’ soccer team came back in a big way, putting themselves in a position to challenge for the Section 9 Class A championship.

The Iron Dukes earned the second seed in the tournament, but saw their season end in the semifinals to the No. 3 Beacon Bulldogs but were rewarded with two players being named Section 9 all-stars.

Senior goalkeeper Alex McAteer was named to the All-Section team, which is made up of players from all six classes in Section 9.

McAteer was a force in the back for the Iron Dukes, and his goalkeeping was a key reason why Marlboro had a resurgent season that saw them finish with a 9-5-2 overall record.

Marlboro coach Jim Ventriglia has known McAteer since he was in sixth grade and said in September that he has good instincts.

“He comes up big. He’s a gamer, and helps us a lot,” Ventriglia said.

Jake Brown has been a leader for the Dukes all season on the other end, as he was a key part of the Iron Dukes’ offense.

“He’s dangerous every time he gets the ball,” Ventriglia said in September. “Every time he’s in the attacking third of the field and he has the space to operate, he has the potential to score a goal. You don’t see that often.”

It’s been another rough season for the Highland Huskies, but goalkeeper Daniel Westover was named a Class B all-star.

And he wasn’t even supposed to be a keeper. He went back there after the Huskies’ regular keeper Dylan Dutra was forced to wear a cast on his arm after an injury.
