By Richard Randazzo, Former Cornwall Town Supervisor
Residents and voters of Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson who love this town as I do, the upcoming Town Election is about the future of our town and believe me our quality of life is at risk. Supervisor Wojehowski and the town board have acted irresponsibly when it comes to borrowing money, spending, taxes and the recent adoption of the Comprehensive Plan.
The Comprehensive Plan which will lead to major zoning changes making the town vulnerable to high density housing, mixed residential development and the real potential for the creation of a village in the Route 9W corridor. A new village will control its own zoning and the rest of the town will have no say or control over future development on that prime land. The result could be high rise residential buildings jammed into the area leading to an uncontrolled population explosion. Totally inflicted upon us by the errant actions of Wojehowski and the town board, with the exception of Councilman McCarty who opposed the adoption of the Comprehensive Plan. That plan must be re-opened and the overdevelopment protections restored.
The town budget, spending and taxes are out of control by Wojehowski and the board. The town budget has exploded from $12 Million in 2023 to $18 Million in his 2027 budget in just five years under Wojehowski. The yearly amount of taxes taxpayers are paying because of his spending spree has increased from $8,644,531 in 2023 to $13,100,560 in his 2027 budget.
That’s a 52% increase, $4.5 Million more directly out of your pocket to pay for the town’s open checkbook policies as a result of his uncontrolled spending.
The town has increased our debt so much as a result of Wojehowski’s tax and spend policies that the annual debt payments have increased from $778,246 in the 2023 town budget to $2,217,055 in 2027. That’s a 284% increase, nearly triple over his five years in office. The bill has come due, most residents can’t afford it and he is not done with his spending and taxing.
We have all heard the phrase, elections have consequences, and we are seeing those now. November 3rd we have a choice. Keep going down this path of tax and spend and face the consequences of dangerous zoning changes or vote to protect your money and our future. The future of the town depends on it.
