Undisclosed threat leads to three-hour school delay

The campuses of Newburgh Free Academy delyed the start of class on the morning of Thursday, January 4 with a three hour delay after receiving an undisclosed threat.

A district-wide letter sent out made the school community aware that there would be additional police presence at the arrival of students and during the course of the day.

Newburgh Superintendent Dr. Jackielyn Manning Campbell further addressed the matter in the letter.

“Late last night [January 3-4], a student reached out to a teacher expressing concern over a statement they had received. We commend the students involved for acting quickly and reaching out to a teacher, who passed the information along to their building administrator. At that time, we enacted the protocol that we have in place to begin an investigation. Local law enforcement was contacted,” she stated. “Throughout the late evening and early morning hours, the district decided to delay school opening to provide additional time for local law enforcement to conduct an investigation. We are thankful for the professional relationships we have developed with our community partners in our shared municipalities and throughout Orange County to assist in providing a safe learning environment for our scholars and educators.”

Information about any situations or threats to safety can be directed to the Director of Safety and Security, who can be reached at 845-563-3429. Main offices of individual schools can also be contacted as well.
