Valley Central hires assistant school superintendent

The Valley Central School Board hired an assistant superintendent at its July 24 meeting.

Superintendent Evette Avila announced that a search committee has hired Ivelisse Mojica as assistant superintendent. Mojica has served as principal at Fostertown School in the Newburgh Enlarged City School District. She will join Valley Central on August 23.

President Joseph Bond opened the meeting by asking for a moment of silence in honor of the passing of Denise James, a longtime custodial and food service worker, on July 16.

Bond thanked Sarah Messing, who stepped down as vice president, at the board’s July 10 re-organizational meeting; the board elected Katie McKnight as vice president at that meeting. Bond noted that he and Sarah came in as partners and went through the challenges presented by COVID. He said Sarah was “super quiet but a powerful force to be reckoned with.”

The meeting was available on YouTube, but both sound and closed captioning were broken up and difficult to follow. In a phone call, District Clerk Ellen McGoldrick said the district is working on solving the problems.

The board will hold its next meet on August 7. Following its public session, the board will hold a retreat, which is not open to the public.
