Wallkill delays winter sports again

The Wallkill Central School District, after pivoting to remote instruction through Jan. 15 also has postponed the start of gymnastics, indoor track and Nordic skiing until Tuesday, Jan. 19, Athletic Director B.J. Masopust announced in a letter to athletes and their families last Wednesday.
They are all considered low- or moderate-risk sports and the Mid-Hudson Athletic League is allowing those sports to begin on Monday.
High-risk sports, which includes winter sports basketball, cheerleading and wrestling have not been authorized by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association to begin. Fall winter sports include cheerleading, football and volleyball, and the spring sport, boys’ lacrosse.
As of Dec. 23, Wallkill plans to resume its offseason workouts when the district returns to hybrid instruction on Jan. 19. Offseason Workout Session 2 will end on Jan. 22. Offseason Workout Session 3, along with Fall Sports Season 2 are scheduled to begin on Monday, March 1.
The New York State Public High School Athletic Association canceled the winter state championships on Dec. 11 and postponed all high-risk sports until authorization is granted by Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the state Dept. of Health.

In a tweet, following the state’s announcement, Section 9 officials announced, “we will do whatever we can to get low-and moderate-risk sports off the ground in January.”
The statement also said many ideas are being explored, which could include moving winter sports to the Fall 2 season in March and April or the spring.
“We are advocating for our student-athletes back to the field the safest way we can,” section officials said in the tweet.
