Marlboro girls advance to State Final Four and a date on the South Shore

The Marlboro softball team is returning to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class B Final Four.

Leah Gunsett threw a four-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and delivered a three-run double in a 5-run sixth inning as the Dukes blanked Section 8 champion Seaford, 5-0, on Saturday at Farmingdale State College.

The win punches the Dukes’ second straight trip to the state semifinals. They’ll face section 5 champion Wellsville at 4 p.m. Friday at Moriches Athletic Complex in Suffolk County. The Dukes advanced to the Final Four last year, but fell 6-2 to section 4 champion Chenango Valley in the semifinals.

The Final Four will have a different look this year. In previous years, the semifinals and championship games were played on the same day. This year, the Dukes will face Wellsville on Friday, and if they win, they will return to the complex at noon Saturday to face the winner of the other semifinal between Section 4 champion Windsor and Section 2 and defending state champion Ichabod Crane.

But the road to the semifinals didn’t look easy, as Gunsett and Seaford pitcher Skylar Secondino matched zeroes for five innings before the Dukes got to her in the sixth inning.

Singles by Madison Gibney, Kalista Birkenstock and Lily Sullivan loaded the bases with one out. Gibney scored Marlboro’s first run when she beat the throw home on Ella Leduc’s fielder’s choice. Then, with two out, Gunsett delivered a three-run double to left field to give Marlboro a 4-0 lead.

Taylor Castellani followed by singling home courtesy runner Mia Verde, running for Gunsett, to give Marlboro a 5-0 lead.

Now, with runs on the board, Gunsett was unfazed, setting down the Vikings in order in the sixth and working around a two-out walk to end the game.

The Iron Dukes punched their ticket to the regional finals with a 1-0 win over Rye Neck in the subregional on May 30 at Middletown High School as Leduc singled up the right field line to score Birkenstock with the winning run in the eighth inning.

Gunsett allowed four hits over the course of eight innings and struck out eight batters.
