Benedict Playground to receive design upgrade

Posted

A group of local residents have begun fundraising to build an inclusive, fully accessible and universally designed playground as an addition to the existing playground at Benedict Farm Park in Montgomery, New York. Universal Design is an improvement upon the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements, and aims to allow full accessibility to all people regardless of age, disability or other factors.

Though there are existing playgrounds within Orange County that are ADA compliant, unfortunately under that compliance, accessibility concerns that may limit an individual with a disability’s full participation persist. For example, certain types of mulch are ADA compliant, however those with wheeled mobility devices may be unable to maneuver across it or do so without significant overexertion.

Thus far, the proposed project has received generous support from the Town Board in Montgomery with more than $100,000 earmarked for the design and execution. However, with the immense cost of universally designed, accessible items, additional support is needed to help bring this project to fruition.

“Our hope is that this playground design will not only allow individuals of all ability levels the opportunity to participate within their communities, but also set a precedent for future playground designs in our area and beyond.” says Kaitlin Rickerd, a local pediatric physical therapist and mother of three who is spearheading the project.
