Bushmen edge Vikings in boys’ soccer

It was a hard-fought match, but the Pine Bush boys’ soccer team managed to escape Montgomery on Friday afternoon with a 4-3 win over the Valley Central Vikings.

The teams matched goals in the second half, but the Bushmen finished the first half with a 3-2 lead.
The Vikings struck first as Brayten Schaper’s goal put the Vikings up 1-0.

However, Pine Bush’s Sean Villanoza drew Valley Central goalkeeper Maddox Rivera out of the net and was able to push the ball past him to tie the game at one.

After the Bushmen (1-1-0) took a 2-1 lead, Valley Central’s Connor Swart’s goal tied the game.

However, Pine Bush got a disputed goal at the end of the first half when Roberto Lopez scored on a very physical play in the net, giving the Bushmen a 3-2 lead.

However, the Vikings (1-1-0) believed Lopez made contact with Rivera and that the goal should have been disallowed.

Two days earlier, the Vikings posted a 5-0 non-league win over Monticello behind two goals by Justin Dorner.

Kyle Cocks, Sebastien Rockwood and Dylan Kresge also scored.

Dorner, Schaper and Cocks had an assist each.

Rivera made four saves and Brennan Donnachie had 1.

The Bushmen entered the game coming off a 2-0 loss to Cornwall. Kealan Stelmaszyk made 10 saves in the game.
