Chapel Field girls crush Fallsburg, 14-2

The Chapel Field softball team is young and inexperienced, but they ran into a team in a similar situation, as they defeated the Fallsburg Comets, 14-2, on Friday afternoon at Chapel Field Christian School.

The game was called after 6 innings by the 12-run rule.

“We have a very young team in terms of softball experience,” Chapel Field coach Bill Spanjer said. “So, we need a couple of games to get our legs under us. We played Eldred and (Livingston) Manor and they’re both more seasoned. So, even a game like this is good for us just to see some things in low pressure situations.”

The top of the Lions’ batting order did most of the damage on Friday as Megan Winter singled and doubled out of the leadoff spot and scored three runs. Skylar Robison had three hits and an RBI. Emma Spanjer singled, doubled and drove in a run. Alanna Venitis had two hits, a run scored and an RBI. Ashlyn Storch singled, doubled walked twice, drove in two and scored two runs.

The Lions scored eight runs in the first two innings, and batted around in the second inning as they scored five runs. Robison and Spanjer had RBI singles in the inning.

The Lions scored in every inning in their biggest offensive output of the season. They lost to Eldred earlier in the season, 15-5, and suffered an 11-1 loss to Livingston Manor on Wednesday.

Even in victory, inexperience showed. It’s a situation the Lions were in last year with five seniors. This year, they only have one senior and are building with younger players.

“There really is the hope of now investing in building a little bit of a program,” Spanjer said. “I’m confident there and already I’m seeing the growth. It’s going to take time.”

Emma Spanjer took the circle for the Lions, allowing two runs on four hits, and struck out 10 batters.

“She’s doing the same thing,” Coach Spanjer said. “She’s a shortstop who had to be a pitcher, but she’s also learning, but this is her second year of doing it on varsity. She’s picking it up and she’s doing well.”

The Lions were scheduled to return to the field on Monday with a road game at Sullivan West before hosting the S.S. Seward Spartans on Tuesday at The Rock Sports Park in Chester. They’re to return to Chester today to visit the Hambletonians.

“The challenge for me is figuring out the order of things to teach and not try to teach too much at once,” Spanjer said. “But I’m seeing it. They’re learning, and getting thrown into situations is the best thing for them. They’ve just got to play, and they’re coming along.”
