Galeville Bridge to close for superstructure replacement

Posted

The Commissioner of Public Works for Ulster County has announced the temporary closure of County Bridge #139, commonly known as the Galeville Bridge, located on Galeville Road spanning the Wallkill River in the Town of Shawangunk. The closure, set to take effect on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, is necessary to facilitate a crucial superstructure replacement project.

The decision to close the Galeville Bridge stems from the need to ensure public safety and expedite the replacement work efficiently. Due to the nature of the project, maintaining traffic flow on the bridge during construction is not feasible. As such, the closure has been authorized under Section 104 of the Highway Law.

Motorists are advised to plan alternate routes during the closure period. Traffic heading across the Wallkill River can utilize the following detour:
• From Galeville Road, proceed south on Albany Post Road for 1.8 miles.
• Turn east onto Bruyn Turnpike and continue for 1.3 miles.

• Follow Bona Ventura Avenue east for 1.1 miles.
• Merge onto NY-208 north and drive for 2.8 miles.
• Turn west onto Denniston Road and continue for 1.4 miles.
• Finally, head south on Sand Hill Road for 1.4 miles to rejoin Galeville Road.

The closure is expected to remain in effect until the completion of the superstructure replacement project. Local authorities urge residents and commuters to plan their travel accordingly and to exercise caution when navigating the designated detour routes.
