General Montgomery Day returns this Saturday

Posted

The Village of Montgomery is known for several community events throughout the year, including the Skip Chambers Tractor Parade, An Old Fashioned Holiday, and the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. But the village’s biggest celebration by far is General Montgomery Day. This all-day party is beloved by thousands and will return on Saturday, September 7.

The day will begin with a continental breakfast served in St. Mary’s Hall from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. At 10:15 a.m., GMD’s newest tradition will take off: the General’s Charge, a one-mile “fun run” that will start at Lolly’s Airport Inn, pass through Union Street, and end at Clinton Street. Participants can run or walk at their leisure and are encouraged to wear costumes; the runners and teams with the most creative costumes will win prizes. A parade will march through the same route at 10:30 p.m., followed by speeches and presentations at the viewing stand on Clinton Street. Trophies and prizes for both runner and parade floats will be awarded at 2 p.m.

During the entire day, residents can browse food, craft, and business vendors strewn throughout Clinton Street and neighboring roads. The First Presbyterian Church will host a lemonade stand and bake sale on its front lawn from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., and the Montgomery Village Museum will open its doors from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Veterans Memorial Park will also host bounce houses and pony rides for children starting at noon.

Several bands will perform during the afternoon and evening; in Clinton Street’s bandstand, Good Vibes will play from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and The Mustangs will play from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. On Clinton Street’s stage, Iron Cobra will play from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Rock Slyde will play from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. In Veterans Memorial Park, Midnight Image will play from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Three special guests will also perform on the village hall’s front lawn at Clinton Street: Macaroni the Clown will tickle funny bones at 1 p.m., Robert Rogers will put on puppet shows from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Bobby the Magician will dazzle audiences with tricks at 4:30 p.m.

The event will conclude with a fireworks display in Veterans Memorial Park at 8:30 p.m.
