Historic Walden Church restored as house of worship

The Walden United Methodist Church, a historical property located on West Street in the village, recently resumed operations under a new owner. Darul Quran WasSunnah, a non-profit Islam organization located in Woodside, Queens, purchased the property in November 2022 and sought to utilize the building as a place of worship and teaching.

Mufti Ruhul Amin, along with several other imams of New York City, founded Darul Quran WasSunnah in 2006 to practice, teach and promote Islam. The organization currently comprises 25 staff members and teaches about 100 students between its headquarters in Woodside and its branch in Walden.

Imam Borhan Uddin, an instructor and administrator at the organization, stated that he and the staff finished the church’s restorations and repaintings and began using the building for weekly prayers a few months ago.

“We already pray the weekly congregational Friday prayer, Jumuah, at the facility,” Uddin said.
