The bus bringing their opponent was about a half-hour late, delaying the start, but it didn’t delay the Pine Bush field hockey team’s offense in a 3-1 non-league win over Coxsackie-Athens on Wednesday afternoon at Pine Bush Elementary School.

Anabelle Rodriguez led Pine Bush’s offense with two of the three goals, an assist was provided by three different players – Alexandria Keith, Jenny Sorrentino and Meaghan Wishinski. Grace Grant made one save in the cage.

The win evened Pine Bush’s record at 2-2 in the young season as they have won their last two games, opening the week with a 2-1 win over Ellenville. Pine Bush was scheduled to finish the week with a non-league contest against Ellenville.

Ashanti Melendez scored Pine Bush’s lone goal against Ellenville, off an assist from Kayla Suleski. Grant made four saves.

The offense started first last Wednesday afternoon when Sorrentino brought the ball down the field and got the ball to Rodriguez in front of the cage. Rodriguez got her shot off and put the ball past Coxsackie-Athens goalkeeper Emma Williams for a 1-0 lead.

Coxsackie-Athens got even just 58 seconds into the second quarter of play when Maeve Squire brought the ball down the field and pushed her shot past Grant to tie the game at 1-1.

The game wasn’t tied for long as Rodriguez’s second goal of the game – off an assist from Wishinski - put Pine Bush ahead for good.

Alexandria Keith tacked on Pine Bush’s third goal of the game with 5:20 to go, as she corralled a ball coming in from the end line and rifled her shot past Williams for the final goal of the game with 5:20 remaining in the second quarter.

Pine Bush had one more opportunity to put the ball in the cage in the second quarter when Sorrentino passed the ball down the field to Anna Jagos, but Williams deflected her shot to maintain Pine Bush’s two-goal lead.

No one scored in the second half, but the defense got more physical in the third quarter especially, as a player from each team was carded on two separate plays. Keith was whistled for 2-minute green card about 5 seconds into the third quarter. And the quarter ended with Coxsackie-Athens’ Sylvia Mattraw-Johnston in the box after getting a 5-minute Yellow Card for a pushing penalty.

Pine Bush posted a second 1-0 win over Ellenville on Friday behind a goal by Leah O’Donnell, and finished the week with an overtime loss to Pine Plains.
