Pine Bush girls’ swimming and diving coach was concerned about the Washingtonville Wizards’ depth at Saturday’s Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association Division II championship meet.

The Bushmen’s talent outshined the Wizards, however, as Pine Bush won the OCIAA Division II championship with 513 points at Washingtonville High School. The Wizards finished second with 485.5 points.

The Valley Central Vikings were a distant third with 303 points and the Wallkill Panthers finished ninth with 83 points.

Pine Bush’s Mackenzie Gula picked up two championships with wins in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke. Her 1:07.11 in the breaststroke was good enough to qualify her for the New York State championship meet, scheduled for November 18 and 19 at the Webster Aquatic Center.

Her teammate Katie Webster outraced Valley Central’s Cali White in the 100-yard freestyle. Both were already qualified for states in that event, but earlier in the meet when White won the 200-yard freestyle, she punched her ticket to states in that event, meeting the qualifier with a 1:56.83.

Webster finished second in the 50-yard freestyle to Minisink Valley’s Michaela Hujus, but her time of 24.74 qualified her for the state meet.

Pine Bush opened the meet in style by winning the 200-yard medley relay with a team of Maya Oakes, Ella Humphrey, Ashley Martin and Gula. It was one of four county championships on the day for Gula, who was also part of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay with Webster, Samantha McKee, and Sadie DeGeorge.
