On Friday January 12, at approximately 10:20 p.m., Town of Montgomery Police were dispatched to an address on Plains Road for a report of shots fired.

A caller to 911 from the residence stated there was male acting out and threatening to get a firearm. The caller then stated there were shots fired inside the residence.

Police arrived and established a perimeter while attempting to make contact with residents. One resident was able to escape the residence once the police arrived. Four other residents were unable to safely evacuate and remained in rooms in the house while the suspect was in a separate room.

According to police, the suspect refused to exit the room and follow the orders of officers. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Group (SOG) was requested to the scene for the armed barricaded subject. The residents trapped in the house were removed using ladders to the windows by the SOG team. Town police report that all residents were safely evacuated and were found to be uninjured.

The suspect continued to ignore all commands to exit the residence and surrender. He also refused to communicate with officers and crisis negotiators on the scene. Once all other options were exhausted, pepper spray and CS gas were used to attempt to get the suspect to surrender. These methods were also unsuccessful as the suspect continued to refuse to surrender to officers.

The SOG team then made entry into the room where the suspect was to take him into custody. The suspect continued to resist arrest and a TASER was used to take him into custody. The suspect was transported to the hospital for physical and psychological evaluations.

Inside the residence several bullet holes were discovered confirming the suspect had fired rounds prior to police arriving on scene. The suspect is being charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the second degree, five counts of Reckless Endangerment in the first degree and Menacing in the first degree.

The Town of Montgomery Police were assisted on scene by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and SOG team, the Orange County Crisis Negotiation Team, Orange County Department of Mental Health, Orange County 911 incident dispatch team and MIRV vehicle, New York State Police, Village of Walden Police, Village of Maybrook Police, Town of Crawford Police, Town of Highlands Police, Town of Shawangunk Police, Ulster County Sheriff’s Office and Walden Fire Department, Town of Montgomery EMS and Paramedics and Empress EMS.
