State qualifiers return for another spring

Two area schools will bring their state qualifiers back for another season, as Pine Bush’s Madison Williams, Valley Central’s Azaziah Marshall and Ava Carsley will return to area tracks this season.

Chapel Field’s lone qualifier – Shaylen Goslar – now runs for Pine Bush. The Lions will not field a track and field team this season.

Pine Bush will see a pair of new coaches, as Anthony DiMarco will take over as coach of the boys’ team and Robin Renahan will take over as the girls’ coach from longtime coach Gerald Risco.

The girls’ team will also be led by returning pole vaulter Ella Galloway, who won a state championship during the winter indoor track season. Also returning is Madison Williams, who qualified for states’ during last season’s outdoor season and the recent indoor season.

Also returning are Maya Riquelme, De’Anne Quioros, Sienna Hunter, Hannah Pawlowski and Averie Klein. Joining the team are Elysia Jackson, Nyla Blakes, Andrea Anzora, Ava Dymond, Jaslenne Ingenito, Shea Toback, Melina Ramdehal and Elisia Hannon.

Renahan said it’s a strong team with plenty of talent and potential.

“These athletes amaze me every day,” Renahan said. “The dedication to the sport and leadership they display are impressive. I am proud of these girls and I am grateful each day for the opportunity to coach them.”

DiMarco has been the head coach of the modified program for the past six years and has led the indoor team for the last two. He’ll enter his first season with plenty of returners.

Lavon James, Jaden Robertson, Xavier Nelson and Nasir Merriman will join the team for the first time, as the Bushmen hope to improve on a daily basis, building off their recent indoor success.

“As I step into this new role for our program, I hope to bring out the best that I know PB track has to offer, all the while honoring the many coaches that have come before me,” DiMarco said. “It’s nice to have a team that is as passionate about this sport as I am. I look forward to the many successes they will achieve.”

The Valley Central Vikings will return two of their three state qualifiers. Only Bianca Staples, who competed in two state events, has graduated. Azaziah Marshall, who finished 10th in the 100-meter dash at least year’s state meet, will return for the boys’ team, while Ava Carsley, who was 21st in the 800-meter, will return for the girls’ team.

Despite the loss of Elijah Bellinger and Kennar Nelson, the Vikings are aiming for a divisional crown, to have success at the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association and Section 9 championships and possibly bring five to 10 athletes to states.

Also returning are Jude Remenar, Dylan Kresge, Shaun Brown, Douglas Stickles and Jared Lucas. They’ll be joined by Aaron Frivas, Logan Hielsey and Frank Meyer.

“This is a veteran team with some unfinished business from last outdoor season,” Valley Central boys’ coach Patrick Kemp said.

The Vikings also will host the Viking Invitational on April 22, with a portion of the proceeds being donated to Newburgh Ministry. Spectators are welcome to bring a non-perishable food item.

The Vikings’ girls’ team will suffer the loss of Staples, Riley Cavalluzzo, Sarai Hill, Cali MacEntee, Hailey Morrison, Allison Robinson and Emma Schoenherr. Carsley leads a group of returners that also includes Riley Conan, Harmony Gutierrez, Kaelyn Marcano, Catherine Primavera, Sydney Remenar, Angelina Vargas and Isabella Wade.

Joining the Vikings this season are Sarah Del Pilar, Maeve Eagan, Jocelyn Korfeld, Keilly Maldonado, Mackenzie London, Samantha Norman and Olivia Schmidt.

“Our goal is to be a competitive team within our section,” Valley Central girls’ coach Allison Borriello said. “We have a great blend of accomplished upperclassmen and incoming freshmen that are ready to compete.”

The Wallkill Panthers lost several key athletes in distance runner Luke Diemoz from the boys’ team and hurdlers Ava Roper and Penelope Rose from the girls’ team.

Returning are jumpers Nazar Yevko and Elena Sindt, hurdlers Aaliyah Gaston and Zion Davis; distance runners Jake and Josh Craypo, Mario Veruto, Andie Psilopoulos and Maria Morales; throwers Amenya Brown and Manny Aviles; sprinters Reynaldo Robinson and Giada Post; and pentathlete Dan Depew.

They’ll be joined by incoming sprinters Gifford Austin and Jason Calazzo; jumpers Jayden Boafo and Mason Birdsell; distance runner Caitlyn Murphy; sprinters Miranda Padilla and Lea Martini; and throwers Ashlyn Thomas, Araceli Ospina, Harold Bruggeman and Connor Bruschi.

“We are a young team and look to have strong freshmen showings for the boys and girls,” Wallkill coach Jennifer Gravelle said. “We are hoping to develop talent and leadership for the present season and the future.”
