Valley Central board hears presentations on building community

Posted

Teachers and administrators made presentations focusing on how building relationships and community improve academic outcomes at the Valley Central school board meeting October 23.

Andrea Cadena, an eighth-grade teacher, talked about the Cultural Diversity Club. She said the club aims to support an inclusive environment in which students from different backgrounds have a sense of acceptance and belonging. The club explores different cultures, traditions, languages and histories. It seeks to promote an environment in which everyone is valued and appreciated.

Superintendent Evette Avila and Ivelisse Mojica, Curriculum and Instruction Official, discussed district goals, including developing the district as a cornerstone of the community.

Dr. Russell Burns, High School Principal, talked about increasing the parent community. He said that increased parent involvement increases student involvement. He said that focus groups engage parents in the academic process.

The elementary school principals discussed creating a sense of community within the classroom. They talked about ways of creating relationships and a sense of belonging, and making school fun.

The meeting started with a presentation by teacher Kristina Storaska on the Go Green Club at Berea Elementary School. Students are learning about solar power (and enjoying S’mores and brownies they created). The club is big on recycling and is collecting recyclables at home as well as in school.
The board will next meet on November 13.
