VC board hears presentation on student TV program

At its October 10 meeting, the Valley Central School Board heard a presentation on a new television program at Berea Elementary School.

Amy Wendell, Literary Coach at Berea, reported on World’s Best Education Student Television. She said the school news program has roots in a similar effort 21 years ago and she is getting it up and running again. She said the program is very popular, with about 50 students participating. She said most students want to present the news, but there are plenty of tasks, including writing.

Superintendent Evette Avila announced that Adam Elkashef is a 2024 National Merit Scholar. The senior attended the meeting and the board and attendees gave him a round of applause.

Avila reported that upcoming parent teacher conferences will be offered virtually as well as in person.

Ivelisse Mojica, Curriculum and Instruction Official, said that she is visiting science labs at other high schools and recently went to FDR High School in Hyde Park. She said that parents are pleased with the drop-off lane at the middle school.

William Miller, Human Resources Official, reported on a Recruitment Committee Meeting. The committee discussed a number of topics including interviewing, searching and diversity. He said the committee, which now has seven members, is looking for more members; he asked anyone interested to contact him.

Kylene Fitsik, an auditor with the Bonadio Group, reported on the school year ending June 30, 2023. She said that her audit showed no material weaknesses.
