Vikings earn a virtual third place in swimming

The 2021 swim season ended the same way it started, virtually.

With each team swimming at its own pool, the Valley Central boys’ swimming team finished third at the Section 9 swimming and diving championships on Feb. 27. The Vikings finished with 271 points. Washingtonville won the meet with 374.5 points and Pine Bush finished 10th with 107.5 points.

Sean Zupko won the only individual event for the Vikings, winning the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:42.26, which in a normal season would have qualified him for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.

The NYSPHSAA previously canceled all winter championships due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Zupko also finished second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 55.61. Jacob Smith was ninth and Thomas Grabinski was 16th.

Valley Central finished second in the 400-yard freestyle as the team of Zupko, Smith, Nicholas Suchy and Kellen Dickman finished the race in 3:27.32. Pine Bush was ninth.

Kellen Dickman finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.44
Dickman was fourth in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:04.61 and Nathaniel Storaska finished right behind him in fifth with a time of 2:08.13. Pine Bush’s Tomek Oakes was 10th.

Suchy was fourth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 2.75. Storaska was ninth and Luke Roberts was 10th. Pine Bush’s Andrew Donaldson was 15th.

The Vikings finished fourth in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:43.53. Pine Bush was ninth. The Vikings also finished fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay and Pine Bush was fifth with respective times of 1:36.55 and 1:37.61.
Roberts finished fourth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.35 and Pine Bush’s Brice Sloley took 13th with a time of 1:01.93.

Smith and Suchy took fifth and seventh respectively in the 100-yard freestyle. Smith finished in 50.70 and Suchy in 50.90. Pine Bush’s Charles Hufcut was 10th and Oakes was 14th.

Hufcut was sixth in the 200-yard freestyle and Valley Central’s Timothy Grabinski took 11th.

Pine Bush’s Kaeden Fisher was 11th in diving with a score of 192.85. The divers only competed in six dives this season, as opposed to the usual 11.

The Vikings’ Nathaniel Walker finished 11th in the 500-yard freestyle. Pine Bush’s Joshua Gallagher was 15th and Valley Central’s Thomas Geiselhart took 16th.
