Walden Heights residents honor their veterans

Happy Birthday to my nephew, Joseph McNamee, on August 15! I hope your brothers are ready to celebrate you!

On Sunday, July 12, residents of the Walden Heights on North Montgomery Street hosted a ceremony honoring the veterans of their building. Each veteran received a challenge coin from fellow residents and a certificate and coin from the Village of Walden.

Among the veterans was US Navy Veteran Herman Stelljes, who served as a Motor Machinist’s Mate Third Class 1944-1946. Herman was born in Germany and came to America when he was one year old. Around the age of seven his family moved up to the Walden area. Following in the footsteps of his two older brothers who were already in the service at the time, Herman enlisted at the age of 17. Herman remembers being in the Philippines when the war ended.

After the war he worked for four years in an apprenticeship on the Railroad and then attended school in New Haven. He served as the town building inspector for eight years and spent most of his life building houses.
Affectionately known as ‘Pop’ and ‘Honey’, Herman married his wife Joyce on November 24, 1946- nearly 80 years ago- and together they have two daughters, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The Walden Heights residents also presented Herman with a patriotic door wreath, and helped to collect the funds to have his military banner displayed in the village with fellow veterans of Walden. This coming January Herman will turn 100 years old!
