Wallkill, VC see changes on the tennis court

There is going to be quite a bit of change on the tennis courts for both the Valley Central Vikings and the Wallkill Panthers this spring.

The Vikings enter the new season having lost their two best players to graduation, while the Panthers will have a new coach, as Jason Diehl takes over for A.J. Higby.

The Pine Bush Bushmen won’t field a boys’ tennis team for the second straight season.

The Vikings enter into a bit of a rebuilding year, having lost their state qualifying doubles team of Dan Zindani and Henri Pothier.

However, they returned Liam Gieger, who will attend the Naval Academy next year, and junior Aiden Kaleta, who will lead the Vikings at first single.

“He has worked on his game with intensity since last season,” Berkowitz said.

The Wallkill Panthers return several key players in seniors J.J. Wagner, Ben Buchalter and Ryan Greene, along with sophomore Depuy. They’ll be joined by newcomer Matt Swider.

“As a first-year coach, I’m very excited with the group we have,” Diehl said. “There’s a good mix of experienced upperclassmen and young, developing talent. Practices have been fun and competitive. I’m looking forward to a great season.”

The regular season will end with the Vikings entering the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament on May 17-19 at Match Point Tennis Center in Goshen. The Panthers will enter the Mid Hudson Athletic League tournament on May 16 and 17 at FDR High School in Hyde Park.

Quarterfinalists in each tournament will move on to the Section 9 tournament at Match Point Tennis Center on May 25 and 26.

There also will be a four- team playoff to determine the OCIAA team champion at Middletown High School on May 10. The OCIAA and MHAL winners will face off for the Section 9 team championship on May 12.
