Youngsters lead the way at Gardiner 5K

It was all about the youth during the 21st annual Gardiner 5K on July 20, starting at Majestic Park.

The race’s top 3 finishers – Chace Snyder of New Paltz, Nathaniel Diemoz and Mario Verruto, both of Gardiner – were all younger than 19 years old.

However, things were a little different on the women’s side as 60-year-old Marisa Strange of Millbrook took 10th overall and was the top female finisher.

The race serves as a fundraiser for the Gardiner Volunteer Fire Department, and in that spirit, Will Capuano, a volunteer firefighter from Modena, returned to walk the course in turnout gear, finishing with a time of 50:37.52.

According to a letter the editor from race committee member Donna Lyons, the meeting room of the firehouse is being refurbished, as the old paneling is being removed and replaced with drywall. New floors are being installed, and the heating and air conditioning is being upgraded.

The race concluded with a barbecue and the children’s fun run. Next year’s Gardiner 5K Classic is scheduled for July 18, 2024.
