Upcoming Activities at Highland Public Library

The Highland Public Library, located at 14 Elting Place, is bustling with activities this summer. Here’s what’s coming up:

Summer Reading Program
There is still time to sign up for the library’s summer reading program, running through August 16. Children are actively participating, reading books, and earning raffle tickets for a chance to win exciting prizes. Those who complete their reading trackers and adventure challenges could earn an invitation to the Ice Cream Social.
This week’s prizes include:

• 2-pack Date Night Scavenger Hunt Tickets
• Legoland Ticket Drawing
• 4-pack Mid-Hudson Discovery Museum Tickets

Community Fridge and Cupboard
The library has launched the Community Fridge and Cupboard, now open with summer hours on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Labor Day. Visitors are encouraged to follow posted safety rules. A flyer with more details will be available soon.

Family Bingo
Join us for Family Bingo on Thursday, July 25, at 3 p.m. Participants will have the chance to win fantastic prizes as part of the Summer Reading Program.

Bigfoot Researchers of the Hudson Valley
On Thursday, August 8, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., Gayle Beatty, a Hudson Valley Bigfoot researcher and local author, will present her findings and adventures in search of Bigfoot. This event will take place in the Meeting Room.

Plastic Recycling Initiative

The library is continuing its plastic recycling initiative in an effort to win a new bench. So far, 72 pounds of plastic have been collected, with 886 pounds more needed. Patrons can contribute by bringing their plastic to the big green box and picking up a flyer at the circulation desk.

New Paltz Repair Cafe is July 27

The New Paltz Repair Cafe will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, at the New Paltz United Methodist Church, located at 1 Grove Street.

The Repair Cafe initiative, which originated in Amsterdam in 2009, was introduced to New Paltz by volunteer organizer John Wackman in 2013. His initiative has since inspired similar events across various communities. The Repair Cafe of the Hudson Valley & Catskills, comprised of local organizers, promotes repair efforts within their respective towns.

Plattekill Golden Seniors are busy

We will be creating beautiful pendants with Mary on Monday, August 12th. Pre-registration is required. You do not need to be a member of our club to attend. Cost is $5 per person per class. Call Mary at 845-857-5388 to register. Leave a message if she doesn’t answer - it just means she is busy crafting!

Plattekill Golden Seniors meet the first Thursday of each month at 1pm and the thirdvThursday of the month at 12 noon for a delicious lunch and to play games. Come out and join us. Membership and activities are open to everyone 55 and older.

Refunds available for Ulster County Pool season pass holders

Due to the unanticipated closure of the County pool, season pass holders are eligible for a full refund. For more information about the refund process, please contact Jodi Corsa from the Department of Public Works (DPW) at (845) 340-3103.

This update follows the recent announcement from DPW that the Ulster County Pool, located at 241 Libertyville Road in New Paltz, will be closed for the season due to significant water loss. The cause of the water loss has been attributed to underground piping failures. Engineers have determined that major capital repairs will be needed, necessitating closure of the pool for the 2024 season

St Augustine’s hosts food pantry

St. Augustine’s School will host a food pantry on the first and third Saturdays of each month from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The pantry is located at 35 Phillips Ave, Highland,Attendees should enter on Phillips Ave and proceed to the rear gym parking lot.
