Becker named Section 9 lacrosse coach of the year

The Highland lacrosse teams were highly rewarded for their success this past season.

Both the boys’ and the girls’ teams suffered one-goal defeats in their

respective Section 9 championship games with the boys’ team losing, 6-5, to Red Hook in the Class C championship game, and the girls’ team losing, 10-9, in the Class D championship game to the James I. O’Neill Raiders.

Goalkeeper Landon Zehr earned Section 9 All-Academic status and fellow senior Karmrin Doyle earned the Bob Scott Award. Second-year girls’ lacrosse coach Ian Becker was named Section 9 Class C/D Coach of the Year.

Freshman midfielder Luke Wiese, Zehr, and senior short-stick defensive middie Andre Coleman were named Section 9 first-team small-school all-stars.

Freshman attacker Logan Davis, freshman midfielder Trevor Coates and freshman defender Thalan Riley were named to the second team.

Sophomore attacker Carson Palmer, freshman midfielder Mark Cureton, sophomore midfielder Eben Yager, freshman defender Andrew Terranova and freshman long-stick middie Mason Bragg were honorable mentions.

On the girls’ team, senior attacker Leah Klotz and senior attacker and draw person Caitlin Becker were named to the Section 9 Class C/D first team, while junior defender Kelcey Whalen, freshman Logan VanZandt and Sophie Murtaugh were named to the second team.

Pine Bush’s Isaac Cruz, Warwick’s Johnny Accardo and Red Hook’s Landon Ramsey also were nominated for boys’ All-American status. Warwick’s Francis Keneally and Goshen’s Tommy Tedeschi earned All-Academic status, along with Zehr. Warwick coach Thomas Kelly was Section 9 boys’ Coach of the Year.

Minisink Valley was the girls’ Class A/B Player of the Year and Saugerties’ Lia McDougall was the Class C/D Player of the Year. Valley Central coach Brooke Axelson was Class A/B Coach of the Year.
