Back Door Books bag of books event at the library

Greetings from River City. Happy anniversary wishes to our beloved Chris and Jenn who celebrate August 16. May the next 27 years bring every joy and happiness, every blessing of God to your lives together, dearests.     

Back Door Books at Newburgh Free Library will be  open Saturday, August 17, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. They are still “bursting at the seams with books in all categories.”  They must clear their treasure-laden shelves, so this month they are holding “a bag event”!  Donate $5 for one grocery bag of books  or $10 for a tote bag full of books you’d love to take home. 

Music lovers…we just received a large donation of a variety of music books, scores and vinyl.”  Their children’s section is bursting with books in all categories for tots through young adults.

Operated by the Friends of the Newburgh Library, this sale by donation book shop is  behind Newburgh Free Library on Montgomery Street.  All proceeds from Back Door Books support the programs of Newburgh Free Library.   There is parking behind the Library on Montgomery Street. They can accept Cash Only, please!

Happy birthday greetings to Caroline Walsh who is celebrating in Heaven, and so lovingly remembered by her beloved nephew, Brian Denniston, and all her cherished family. Happy birthday, dear Caroline!

 Sacred Heart Donations for Mary’s Hope: They need cereal, canned corned beef, tuna, chicken, chili, fruit, packages of mashed potatoes and gravy mix (no jars). Movie Night: On Friday, August 16, the movie will be APPARITION HILL, a movie about Medjugoria in Bosnia Herzegovina. Seven strangers investigate the mysterious (Holy) phenomenon where Mother Mary is said to have been appearing to 6 visionaries almost daily since June 24,1981. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the movie will start at 6 p.m. Pizza, drinks, and snacks along with some good old-fashioned fellowship.  There will be a Holy Hour on Wednesdays from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Listed below are the dates and church where it will be held. Please note that the scheduled church is subject to change. August 21 at Sacred Heart Church; August 28 at Saint Francis of Assisi Church; September 4 at Saint Patrick’s Church; September 11 at Sacred Heart; September 18 at Saint Francis; and September 25 at Saint Patrick’s.
Congregation Agudas Israel (CAI) Book Signing and Brunch: 11 a.m. on Sunday, September 8 at 290 North Street meet Rabbi Margie Cella as she talks about her new book, “Hindsight is 2020: Torah Lessons from a Turbulent Time.”  Books will be available to purchase and sign, or you can purchase them at rabbicella.com and bring them with you for signing. RSVP’s are required by Wednesday, September 4, by calling (845) 562-5604.

Temple Beth Jacob (TBJ) Mitzvah Arugah Knitting Group will meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 5, 19 and 26. Feel free to pick up yarn at the Temple office anytime and drop off finished hats. There is NO cost to you, and all are welcome to join this growing circle of “Hookers and Loomers.”

Temple Beth Jacob’s Sisterhood Dinner is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday, August 22 at Vesuvio’s Restaurant. Please bring $45 in cash per person, for the dinner. Sisterhood dues of $18 can be paid by check at the dinner. Please Note: RSVP by August 16 to (845) 562-5604.

Alden Solovoy Program at 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 12. Temple Beth Jacob (TBJ) will host Alden Solovoy, the Poet of the Reform Movement from Israel. Alden, a former American businessman who made aliyah a few years back, will set the table for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur with Lofty Verses from the Highest of Holy Days, a reading from his newest book of poetry, inspiring inner reflection.

From Temple Beth Jacob (TBJ): “Gift of Life Bone Marrow Swabbing Drive – Stem cell donors needed for the Gift of Life Marrow Registry.  So far, we have had 85 matches! Donors must swab the inside of their cheeks and complete a registration form. They must be 18 to 35 years old and in good health. Volunteers are to help find someone’s match. Contact Sherrill Murray-Lazarus to volunteer at smlazarus@yahoo.com.

The upcoming swabbing dates: Sunday, August 18 from 12 - 4 p.m. at Thomas Bull Memorial Park, 211 Route 416, Montgomery; Thursday, Aug. 29, from 6 - 9 p.m. at Billy Joe’s Ribworks, 26 Front Street, Newburgh; Tuesday, September 24 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at SUNY Orange Newburgh Campus Kaplan Hall: Main Lobby, One Washington Center, Newburgh. Wednesday, September 25 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the SUNY Orange Middletown Campus, Rowley Center for Science and Engineering, 1st floor lobby, 115 South Street, Middletown.

The Newburgh Jewish Community Center (JCC) Stretch, Strengthen and Balance Class is held at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesdays at the JCC with TBJ member and health coach Paula Martino. Perfect for all fitness levels, the class includes a warm-up, standing stretches, strength exercises (with optional light weights), balance training, and a relaxing cool-down. Classes are $5 per person.

JCC Outdoor Shabbat will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23 at 290 North St. Join in for a great time among friends with food, drinks and live music.  RSVP by Monday, Aug. 19, to (845) 562-5604. $18 per adult or $10 per child.

JCC Line Dancing for Intermediate/Advanced is held at 12:30 - 2 p.m. on Wednesdays. There is no fee to dance; “just come and have a good time.” Please Note: JCC Line Dancing for Beginners will be on hold for the summer and will restart in the fall.
