Cornwall Elementary students are now Hudson River experts!

On Sept. 27, students from Cornwall Elementary School spent the day at Donahue Memorial Park. The Orange County Water Authority, in conjunction with Hudson Valley Sloop Clearwater, taught the children about the Hudson River estuary. After a brief introduction, the kids were split into five groups with each rotating through an equal number of stations throughout the day. At one station, a seine net was used to capture fish, which the students observed and learned how to identify. They studied macroinvertebrates - aquatic animals without spines. Another group put together a large puzzle as they learned where the river starts and ends, and the depth of the water in specific locations. They created fish prints and were taught the different characteristics of fish and their anatomy. The young minds were also educated about which direction the river flows, the type of water it contains, as well as how navigation has changed since the early explorers.
