Every year, like clockwork, the Fort Montgomery Fire Department brings in several dozen volunteers to spend most of a day educating local pre-kindergarten through second graders on basic fire prevention techniques. From learning how to call 911 to practicing ‘stop, drop and roll’ to exploring the equipment on a fire truck, the children are escorted through the fire house by firefighters. The event is supported by Orange County, with the use of it’s smoke trailer, where the children learn why it’s important to stay low if there is smoke in a room, and the Town of Highlands Police Department, which provides officers to escort children walking from the elementary school to the fire house. Every child left with a fire hat, water bottle, activity book and other trinkets. Here, some of the scenes of the day, held on October 8.
