The idea of forming a Town of Lloyd Lions Club took root several years ago, but it wasn’t until May that the group attracted the required 20-plus members and was officially recognized as a chartered club by Li-ons Club International. The milestone was celebrated recently with a recognition dinner at the Stonehedge Restaurant in West Park.

Ed Bozydaj is president of the new chapter.

“It took a lot of strong shoulders to build this, and we are in conversation with the Highland Rotary Club to see if we can work together in the future, so both of us can help serve and take care of the community,” he said.

On Sept. 26, the club will host a “Head to Toe” event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the St. Augustine gym, 35 Phillips Ave., Highland.

“We’ll have bins to collect hats, coats, shoes and socks for those in need in the winter months, and we’ll have entertainment to draw people in,” Bozydaj said. “Other entities from across the county will have ta-bles to show the community what services are available to them.”

Barbara Gavin said about 40 vendors are expected at the event.

“We’ll have people there to answer questions and provide information on veteran services, mental health information, foot doctors, hospital and Alzheimer’s contact information and local nursing homes, to name just a few,” Gavin said.

The Lions Club meets every fourth Tuesday of the month at 6:15 p.m. in Building 13 at 1300 Hudson Place, behind the Highland Dollar General. Meetings are open to all. For more information, call 845-337-5693.
