Following months of drafting, review, and discussion, the Board of Trustees was expected, on October 19, to approve a new local law, and replace the old one, regulating signs.
The final review took place at the October 5 work session, but attorney Joe McKay said the final draft before the board was relatively unchanged from the original. It does clarify if someone wants to place a sign on their lawn near the sidewalk, it can’t be in the grassy area between the sidewalk and the roadway because that’s part of the village right-of-way.
The new law also provides definition to billboards. While the code regulates billboards, there was no real definition in the village code. The new law also removes a section from the original which regulated the content of a sign.
A draft was submitted to the Planning Board and the Orange County Department of Planning for review. The Planning Board only had questions and the county provided no response leaving the board free to adopt the local law.
In some other matters before the board at the meeting:
Fireman’s parade. It was announced that the Cornwall-on-Hudson Fire Department took first place in marching and first place tanker during the annual Orange County Fireman’s Parade which was held in Washingtonville on September 26.
Paving. Shore Road will be closed on October 26 and 27 for repaving following the replacement of a water main last month.
New vehicle. Water Department Superintendent Daniel Nye requested the purchase of a new vehicle. The department has a 2017 Chevy Tahoe which was recently sent out for a new transmission and last week the check engine light popped on. It was determined the vehicle is in need of extensive repairs. Nye said the motor in that truck is prone to issues, so he sought permission to purchase a 2026 Tahoe on state contract. Trustee Tiffany Gagliano requested Nye look into getting quotes on any older vehicles if available. If the board authorizes the purchase, Nye’s Tahoe would be purchased through the village’s general fund and the 2017 would be transferred to the building inspector. The building inspector’s current vehicle would be returned to the fire department.
