Raider tennis team works to improve record

The O’Neill girls’ tennis season began its 2024 campaign on Friday, Sept. 6 at home with a match against Burke, Coach Rokhsha Michael-Razi said last week. So far, the team had played seven matches and has a record of 2-5-0, with nine matches remaining. Three of those are at home, she said.

While their record isn’t the best, Michael-Razi can’t stop talking about how proud she is of her team.
“The youngest player of our team is Eve Waite, a seventh grader who’s been training and playing tennis for a few years at a local private club and now with us,” she said. “And there are many new players in our team this year, including eighth grader Elizabeth Wojtaszek.”

She added that three freshman, Abigail Sawicki, Madilynn Williams and Ruby Robinson have been “great additions to our Lady Raiders team”.

The captains are senior Sophia Mitchell and eleventh graders Madelyn Bourne and Kayla Chen. Seniors are Vivian Contant, Ashley Crespo, Scarlet Deaton, Millie Ostrander and Addison Page.

Rounding out the team are sophomores Jolene Cromer, Siena Decker, Karoline Hasz and Ava Nowicki, and junior Ava Hurtado.

“My girls are the nicest team out there,” Michael-Razi said. “They show sportsmanship like no others in this area. One of my seniors, Millie Ostrander, just picked up the racquet for the first time, and she has been player of the week numerous times. She has found tennis soothing and enjoyable -- her tremendous effort on each point during long rallies have been an inspirational part of her performance.”
Last week, on September 26, the six seniors were honored during a home match against Kingston.
