Saturday, October 5 is Twin Forts Day at Fort Montgomery

The 247th Commemoration of the Battle of Forts Montgomery and Clinton will take place on Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Fort Montgomery State Historic Site, 690 Rt. 9W, Fort Montgomery.

Fort Montgomery was the scene of a fierce Revolutionary War battle for control of the Hudson River. On October 6, 1777, British, Loyalist and Hessian forces attacked Fort Montgomery and nearby Fort Clinton. The defending American Patriots, outnumbered 3 to 1, fought desperately until driven out of their forts at the points of the enemy bayonets. More than half of the Patriot forces were killed, wounded or captured.

As part of the October 5 events, there will be a Historical, Theatrical Presentation at 12 and 2 p.m. called ‘The Youngest Rebel’. It tells the story of Hugh Morrison, Fort Montgomery’s youngest ‘soldier’, an eight-year-old boy present on the day of the battle. Performed by Drama from the Past, you can get more information at facebook.com/dramafromthepast.

The Fort Montgomery Battle Site Association will host the event. In addition to reenactors from the 5th New York Regiment, Lambs and Mott’s Artillery Companies, there will be military drill, and fife and drum music throughout the day.

At 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., there will be cannon firing demonstration (preceded by the fire and drum music).

The day will be full of events, but there is no battle re-enactment this year.

Visitors can tour the remains of the 14-acre fortification, perched on a cliff overlooking the magnificent Hudson, and can learn about this important military post at the site’s museum, which showcases original artifacts and weapons, large scale models of the fort and the attack, highly detailed mannequins frozen in poses of battle, and an action packed 15-minute movie of the 1777 assault. There is a spectacular view of the Hudson River from the Grand Battery, where the cannons stand guard.
