Two men are facing federal charges following an Aug. 20 armed robbery at the Newburgh Mall, Town of Newburgh police said.

Police responded to the mall parking lot at 1401 Route 300 at about 6:34 p.m. Aug. 20 for a report of an altercation involving a firearm. Officers found a male victim and determined that he had been robbed by two men during a pre-arranged transaction.

According to police, one suspect displayed a firearm while the other brandished a knife. One of the suspects also stole the victim’s vehicle and intentionally struck the victim with the vehicle while fleeing. The stolen vehicle was later recovered unoccupied.

Officers stopped a vehicle believed to have been involved in the incident a short distance from the mall and arrested one suspect without incident.

Town detectives continued the investigation and identified the second suspect. He was located at a Dollar General store in the Town of Fishkill at about 6:20 p.m. Aug. 31 and taken into custody without incident.

Both suspects are being charged federally, and the case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. Both are in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

Police said the incident was isolated and there is no ongoing threat to the public. No additional information about the suspects was released because the investigation remains active. Town police did not release the names of the suspects.

The investigation was assisted by the FBI Hudson Valley Safe Streets Task Force, Hudson Valley Crime Analysis Center, City of Newburgh Police Department, New York State Police, Orange County District Attorney’s Office, U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York and Town of Newburgh Emergency Medical Services.
