Loss drops PB girls to 4th seed

The Pine Bush Bushmen’s difficulties against the Newburgh Free Academy Goldbacks continued in last week’s regular-season finale.

The Bushmen struggled defensively, falling 7-2 in their final Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association Division I softball game on Thursday at Pine Bush Elementary School.

The game was originally scheduled to be played on Wednesday, but was postponed until Thursday, nearly right up until the Section 9 seeding meetings.

The Bushmen entered the game already qualified for the Section 9 Class AAA playoffs, having clinched a .500 overall record when they beat the Cornwall Dragons, 3-0 on May 14 to secure their 10th win of the season.

However, with the loss, the Bushmen fell to 5-7 in the division and the fourth seed in this week’s tournament.

They were scheduled to visit the Middletown Middies on Tuesday at Middletown High School.

The Bushmen lost two out of three to the Middies during the regular season. The winner would face the winner of the other semifinal between the No. 3 Goldbacks and the No. 2 Monroe-Woodbury Crusaders.

The Bushmen have also lost two of the three to the Crusaders and have now been swept by the Goldbacks, who put the game away early when they put up six runs to put the game away early, mostly with two outs.

The Bushmen got on the board the fifth inning when Meaghan Wishinski reached on an error and scored on an RBI single by Madison Sheets. They added another in the sixth inning when Ava Boffalo reached on a bunt, took second on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error.
