Mid-Hudson Astronomers to Sponsor talk on “Bad Science, Bad Astronomy”

Posted

On Tuesday, May 21, Jack Chastain, president of the Mid-Hudson Astronomical Association, will present a short study on weird Ideas in space. The presentation will be live at SUNY New Paltz and also streamed via Zoom.

This talk will take a look at what might be best described as odd
Ideas - things taken from several sources that may or may not be out there somewhere. It will be a fun look at how some wierd ways of looking at our universe might come into being. It will be totally different than presentations throughout the year which are serious talks about serious subjects made to the MHAA. Some of these might be speculative but overall they present good science and where our current levels of knowledge are regarding such subjects.

MHAA President Chastain, long standing member of the organization, has been interested in science and space
for as long as his memory goes back. He submitted a very poorly thought out idea to NASA through Chris Kraft - the NASA Flight Director, when he was 13 - and got an answer! The answer was, basically, "Please study Physics" - so he did! Subsequently he worked as a UNIX Systems Engineer for a number of years at Verizon, retiring in 2018. He gives multiple presentations for groups outside of the MHAA and tries NOT to make up too many things about how the universe works.

The live event will immediately follow the regularly scheduled business meeting of the Mid-Hudson Astronomical Association which starts at 7:30.  A link to the Zoom event will be sent to participants registered.  To register go to midhudsonastro.org and select "ATTEND" at the association's Meetup site.  The zoom link will be sent to those registered by the day of the event. To attend only the presentation join in before 8 PM and you will be admitted to the final minutes of the association meeting.  The presentation will begin at 8.  To attend both events join in or attend live by 7:30.   The talk will be recorded so that it can be viewed later by anyone who cannot attend.

Participants may call or text Tim Denman at 845-245-5483 for assistance or for further details.
