Pine Bush All Stars capture state title

It took three games and three wins, and Pine Bush was crowned the New York State Senior League softball champions.

Pine Bush finished its three-game sweep with an 18-3 win over Cornwall on Wednesday at Virginia Road Field in White Plains.

The game was called after four innings by the 15-run rule.

Pine Bush initially fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first inning, but they responded immediately in the bottom of the first inning. Molly Dowson drove home Julianne Gabriele with a groundout and Pine Bush tied the game at 2-2 when Emily Muro scored on a wild pitch. They took the lead on the same play when Alexa Kopicki scored on an error.

Ariana Nunes finished the first-inning scoring when she scored on a wild pitch.

Overall, Cornwall made 10 errors in the game.

Dowson finished with two hits, including a triple and drove in four runs and scored two, and Nunes had a hit, drove in three runs and scored three. Alanna Christie had two hits, scored a run and drove in a run. Gabriele had two hits, scored four runs and drove in a run.

Pine Bush blew the game open with five more runs in the second inning. After Cornwall scored a run in the top of the third inning, the game got further out of control when Pine Bush scored eight more runs to take a 17-3 lead after three innings.

Christie scored when Courtney Flynn reached on an error to end the game with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Pine Bush will now move on to the East Regional tournament in Worcester, Mass. Pine Bush will compete in the Mid-Atlantic Pool against state champions from Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

The teams will play three days of Pool Play from Saturday until Monday. That will be followed by two days of single-elimination bracket play, ending with Wednesday’s championship game.

The tournament champion will play in the 2024 senior League Softball World Series from July 29 until Aug. 4 at Lower Sussex Little League in Delaware.

Pine Bush opened the tournament with two wins on July 8.

Flynn struck out 10 batters and had two hits, and three runs scored in Pine Bush’s 11-2 win over Cornwall.

Gabriele had a hit and two runs scored. Dowson had two hits, a run scored and four RBIs. Muro had two hits and two RBIs. Kara Wittenberg singled and drove in a run. Aryanna Pena drove home two runs with a single.

Pine Bush finished the first day of the tournament with a 12-7 win over Washingtonville.

Julianne Gabriele doubled twice, and Courtney Flynn had three hits and three runs scored. Molly Dowson had two hits, a run scored and three RBIs. Ariana Nunes drove in two runs.
