For more than 30 years, the Department of Public Works has sought out, cut down, transported, and decorated the holiday tree, which is now set up on Broadway outside of City Hall. 2020 was not going to be the exception.

On December 9, the Blue Spruce was brought to Lower Broadway, where it now stands more than 30 feet high. The tree was donated by Mr. & Mrs. Michael Allwood of the Town of New Windsor.

The tree was transported compliments of Michael Bigg, Jr. and Quality Towing, along with their crane operator, John Ammirati, who has been installing the tree in the City of Newburgh for more than two decades.

“The transport of the tree every year is a group effort and I thank everyone who came out to help. A special thanks to the Allwood family for their donation this year. The tree looks beautiful on Broadway,” said George Garrison, City of Newburgh Department of Public Works Superintendent.

As always, this festive tradition would not be possible without the dedication of countless DPW staff who go above and beyond to make this event possible each year. The City of Newburgh wishes to acknowledge the hard work of all involved, and thank everyone for their efforts. Most specifically, George Garrison and members of his Department including Hector Iglesias, Chris McGuiness, Tim Maneely, Marty Gillen, Jimmy Bandura, Tony Martinez, Alfredo Granado, George Dunlop, Mike Rauchet, and Brandon Williams.

Due to COVID-19 related public health concerns, the City of Newburgh will not host a live audience at the 2020 Christmas Tree Lighting. A virtual countdown will be livestreamed on Monday, December 14, 2020 during the City Council meeting and via our social media outlets.

This year’s tree is dedicated to former Councilwoman Regina Angelo, who served as part of the City Council for over thirty years, and has continued to spearhead many of the City’s emblematic celebrations which include the Memorial Day Parade, Fourth of July Celebrations, International Festival, and the annual Christmas Tree lighting celebration. Therefore, it is only fitting that former Councilwoman Angelo be recognized this year for her devoted service through the dedication of this year’s Christmas Tree
