Ulster taking ‘proactive steps’ towards asylum seekers

Posted

While many asylum seekers arriving in New York City have been put on buses and sent upstate, none have yet made it to Ulster County.

“At this time, Ulster County has not been contacted by the New York City government regarding the relocation of migrant asylum seekers to temporary housing in Ulster County,” said Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger in a statement released last week. “We are taking proactive steps to prepare for any possible developments and continue to actively monitor the situation. I want to thank Governor Kathy Hochul for traveling to Washington yesterday to meet with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and members of the New York Congressional Delegation to press for expedited federal resources to address this crisis. Ulster County is committed to protecting all of our residents and providing them with safety, respect, and dignity they deserve. I will continue to engage with every level of government to ensure that we are meeting that commitment.”

The situation is different in Orange and Ulster Counties, where busloads have immigrants have arrived, prompting declarations of emergency and lawsuits filed in an effort to keep further immigrants from arriving.
