Yan brothers together for one final season of NFA golf

It was a bit of a changing of the guard last year for the Newburgh Free Academy boys’ golf team as Josh Yan won his first Section 9 championship, beating his older brother, Mark.

This season will be the last time the Yan brothers play together for the Goldbacks as Mark is a senior and will be hoping to regain his sectional championship for the last time.

Once again, the Yan brothers will compete for both the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association and Section 9 championships and will look to improve on their finishes at the New York State championships. Josh Yan finished in a three-way tie for 24th place, while Mark finished in a six-way tie for 58th.

Behind the Goldbacks are looking to add a few more OCIAA qualifiers.

Newburgh’s second-year coach Dave Doulin said Carter Babbage, Jon Roe and Jordan Ouhaj had good seasons last year, and are looking to qualify for postseason play.

The Goldbacks also are looking to repeat as OCIAA Division I team champions after posting an 11-1 record last year.

“We have a great turnout with new players trying to make the lineup this season,” Doulin said. “We are deeper and more competitive within our team, which should result in a better result in our division, and hopefully in the postseason.”

On the girls’ team, the Goldbacks’ Reagan Roth finished in a tie for 58th place at the state championships. As a junior, Roth finished fifth at the Section 9 tournament in her junior year.
